Today, we celebrate the dedication of HR professionals in fostering a positive work environment, attracting and retaining top talent, and driving strategic initiatives that propel us forward. At DSG, we’re proud of our fantastic People team, who work tirelessly to make our workplace a great place to be.
To mark this special day, we asked our team what working with people means to them and why they enjoy being part of the People team at DSG.
Abigail Tester, our Head of People & Engagement: “Like many of us in the world of Human Resources, and People; I fell into my role, and it has allowed my work and position to become so important to me. We have many relationships in our lives, and we each experience roller-coaster moments. My job is to bring the human-spirit into the workplace, and to tap into the contributions we all bring, true diversity. What do I think matters the most when working in HR? Presence, engagement, communication, understanding our people, and listening. We all have a story and each organisation’s story comes from its people.”
Danielle O’Leary, People Experience Assistant: “Working as part of the People Team of DSG Group enhances me to create effective solutions to problems and to touch base with people I do not normally work with. Working with people allows me to combine my skills and perspectives to find solutions to any problems and challenges that may arise every day. In working with people daily it is very important to understand individuality and allow people to voice their opinion . As a member of the People Team at DSG Group I always work to the best of my ability to put our employees first. I believe working with the People team enhances the use of my skills of accountability , adaptability and having a positive attitude to work.”
Ruairi Coffey, Head of Social Value, Skills & People Development: “For me, working with people is where I get the most enjoyment and satisfaction in this role. It’s working with people that enables you to get the job done. Processes, strategies, reports, KPI’s – these are essential tools for success, but it is the relationships we have as a team in DSG that create our success. Everyone’s passion is evident is every conversation and it’s gives you energy to keep pushing and challenge yourself to be better. One of my favourite quotes is “Growth is never by mere chance, it is the result of forces working together”.
Lula Walmsley, Marketing & Communications: “At DSG, I love being in the midst of people as I am a sociable person. I learn from those around me and come away feeling lighter. My green collaborative personality thrives in this environment, and being part of such a rewarding team really makes my role at DSG fulfilling. The People team embodies a culture of support, growth, and innovation, making every day an opportunity to contribute to and learn from the diverse talents within the company. Although people may not see Marketing and Communications as a ‘people role’ I would say they are wrong. I get to work with all departments, which gives me the opportunity to connect with others, share knowledge, and ultimately support growth, this creates a vibrant and fulfilling work atmosphere – I feel as though I have found my place!”
Olivia Charman, People Experience Assistant: “I always loved the below quote from Sheryl Sandberg. It’s what made me so interested in HR, the work that goes into helping not just the company you’re in but the people that make up the company. Being people focused is what ensures a happy working environment which in turn produces results for the company. “The true power of HR lies in its ability to unleash the full potential of every individual within an organization.” – Sheryl Sandberg”
Darren Edwards, People Experience Advisor: “Everything Changes When I Do.”
“I started my career in HR five years ago because I saw firsthand the impact decisions made at head office have on people; both employees and customers, but more importantly the impact managers have on people. I’d had my fair share of bad managers, you learn a lot from them, including how not to be one. It took me a long time to become good manager, longer to admit to myself that I was in-fact a good one, and I believe like with everything in life, it is something I will continue to learn and develop as I go.
We often see the flaws in others easier than the flaws in ourselves – be open to change, be honest with yourself, and be mindful of everyone around you. When you treat people like people, you’re already most of the way there.”
Clodagh Gavaghan, People Experience Advisor: “I enjoy being part of the People Experience team as it gives us the opportunity to positively impact the lives of our employees and grow the business through our people. People Experience plays an important role in any organisation because the department manages and promotes the most vital asset-people. Without people, there won’t be an organisation, to begin with.”
Making Time for Movement: Prioritising Mental Health Awareness
In a world that often moves at breakneck speed, it’s easy to overlook the importance of taking moments for movement. At the Danny Sullivan Group, we understand the significance of mental health, not just during Mental Health Awareness Week, but every day.
As a leading supplier of skilled labor in the UK, we recognise that the well-being of our workforce is paramount. That’s why we’re committed to promoting a culture that encourages both physical and mental wellness. This year’s Mental Health Awareness Week theme, “Moments for Movement,” resonates deeply with us. We believe that taking the time to move your body is not just a necessity but a fun opportunity to connect with yourself and those around you.
It’s all too easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of daily life, but stopping to ask someone how they are can make a world of difference. And more importantly, it’s not about getting a response, but truly listening to what they have to say. If you’re struggling, we want you to know that it’s okay to reach out. Whether it’s to a friend, a family member, or a professional, there is always someone willing to lend an ear and offer support.
“If you don’t make time for your wellness, you will be forced to make time for your illness,” Tim Jackson, Head of Health, Safety, Wellbeing and Sustainability. That’s why we encourage everyone to prioritise their mental health, not just during this designated week, but as an ongoing commitment to self-care.
At DSG, we’re dedicated to fostering an environment where mental health is valued and supported. Let’s make movement a part of our daily lives, not just for our physical health, but for the well-being of our minds and bodies. Together, we are creating a culture of care and compassion.
As the Head of Health, Safety, Wellbeing, and Sustainability at DSG, I find it imperative to address the pressing issue of stress, especially during Stress Awareness Month. This year, our focus revolves around the theme #LittleByLittle, emphasising the significance of small steps in managing and alleviating stress.
In today’s fast-paced world, stress has become unavoidable for many. However, by incorporating simple yet effective practices into our daily lives, we can gradually reduce its impact and get back to a healthier mindset.
Here are a few of my top tips to try this month:
Connecting with people is vital. Whether it’s catching up with a friend over coffee or simply sharing a laugh with a colleague, human connection has the ability to ease stress and promote a sense of belonging.
Prioritising sleep is another fundamental aspect of stress management. Rest not only rejuvenates the body but also improves brain function, helping us to tackle challenges with a clear mind. Remember, quality sleep sets the foundation for a productive day ahead.
Embracing movement in our own way is also key. Whether it’s a session of practicing yoga ( we highly recommend Yoga with Adriene) in the comfort of our homes or going for a leisurely walk outdoors, finding a physical activity that resonates with us can significantly reduce stress levels and boost overall wellbeing.
Spending time in nature is a powerful tool to reduce stress. Nature has a remarkable ability to soothe the mind and give us space to think, even a short stroll in the park or sitting by the lake can work wonders in restoring inner peace.
Incorporating deep breathing exercises, inspired by meditation influencers, can help center our thoughts and reduce stress in moments of tension. Taking a few moments each day to practice mindfulness, check in with yourself, and set goals for the day can help create structure, and ultimately, reduce stress.
At DSG, we are committed to supporting our employees’ mental health and wellbeing. If you or someone you know is struggling with stress, remember that help is always available. Reach out to helplines or seek professional support to navigate through difficult times.
As we observe Stress Awareness Month, let us embrace the #LittleByLittle approach and take proactive steps towards nurturing our mental and emotional wellbeing. Together, we can create a culture of resilience and support, where stress is no longer a barrier but a catalyst for personal growth and transformation.

Anything you say is confidential. We won’t share anything, unless we think you or someone else may be at risk or we’re legally obliged to do so.

International Women’s Day holds great significance at the Danny Sullivan Group (DGS). We met with some of our remarkable women from DSG Headquarters to explore what this day means for them and to share their experiences as women within our sector.
Shannon Murphy, Accounts Payable
In my eight years with the Danny Sullivan Group, I have been supported by fantastic management throughout and provided with a number of opportunities to develop my skillset and build a meaningful career. The inclusive environment is embedded through the family values in the business and as a woman I have always felt respected, listened to, and empowered to contribute. But we know this isn’t the same experience for all women. We must keep having these open conversations, looking at how we can build inclusivity and support women to achieve their highest potential – not just in construction, but across all industries UK-wide.
Clare Stack, Senior Training Team Leader
Entering the construction industry wasn’t just a career choice for me; it was an opportunity to lead in a demanding role. Inspired by the tales of my male family members who have worked in construction, I found myself drawn to the dynamic nature and problem-solving challenges that this sector offers. Despite the industry’s typical male-dominated status, my experience has been nothing short of fulfilling.
I have had the privilege of breaking barriers and inspiring other women. One memorable instance was during a challenging project where teamwork was paramount. Regardless of gender, we collaborated seamlessly, by embracing an inclusive culture fostered by strong leadership and transparent communication.
To women considering a career in construction, I say “seize the opportunity. Don’t let stereotypes or the industry’s male-dominated reputation deter you. Seek mentorship, build connections with other women in the industry, and believe in your unique abilities. Construction offers diverse roles, embrace the challenges as opportunities, knowing that your journey will pave the way for future generations of women. Take the leap—it’s worth it.”
Debbie Guinan, Payroll and Billings Manager
Being a woman in the construction industry initially felt daunting, but my journey with the Danny Sullivan Group spanning 14 years has been transformative. Starting as a Payroll Administrator in a small team of three, I’ve steadily progressed to become the Payroll and Billings Manager, now overseeing, and supporting seven incredible, hardworking women.
The unwavering support, guidance, and opportunities for advancement have been truly empowering. We prioritise our people and uphold our company values, which I witness in action every day. Despite the ever-evolving landscape of the construction sector , I am continually impressed by our commitment to staying ahead of the curve and fostering an inclusive environment.
