A Journey Rooted in Hard Work
Growing up on a farm, Gavin was no stranger to machinery or physical labour. Surrounded by experienced family members, he learned to operate various plant equipment from a young age. These formative experiences instilled in him not only technical skills but also a deep appreciation for hands-on work—a passion that would later shape his career path.
As the farming industry began to decline, Gavin sought a trade that would offer long-term stability and opportunities. He pursued a three-year carpentry and joinery apprenticeship, mastering the craft and working in the profession until the age of 23. However, Gavin’s outgoing personality and love for teamwork left him yearning for something more dynamic.
Rising Through the Ranks
Transitioning into the utility sector, Gavin joined a team installing substations and power cables, starting at the bottom with trench work. Determined to advance, he set his sights on operating plant machinery, a role that combined his technical know-how and drive for better opportunities.
Through sheer persistence—spending weekends unpaid to practice on excavators—Gavin quickly became the team’s top operator and, within months, was leading his own crew. His story is a testament to the belief that opportunities are there for the taking if one is willing to work hard and embrace challenges.
Passion for Assessment
For the past 12 years, Gavin has channelled his hands-on expertise and personable nature into his role as an NVQ assessor and quality assurance compliance professional. His approach to on-site assessments is grounded in creating a relaxed atmosphere for candidates, ensuring they can demonstrate their true potential without the added stress of formal evaluations.
